Bible Verses About Lust: Scripture for When You're Tempted, When You've Fallen, and for the Long Fight (NIV)

The granite summit of Mount Sinai wrapped in a glowing cloud at first light, shafts of sun breaking through onto the boulders below, where God's law first named the desire behind lust.

The Short Answer

  • The Bible treats lust as a matter of the heart. Jesus calls looking at someone lustfully adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), and James 1:14–15 shows how entertained desire grows into sin.
  • Being tempted is not the same as giving in. Jesus was tempted in every way and did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Christians differ on whether the first unchosen stirring is sin, but agree: don't feed it, and don't despair that it came.
  • Tempted: 1 Corinthians 10:13, Psalm 119:37, James 4:7. Just fell: 1 John 1:9, Psalm 51:1, Hebrews 4:16. Long fight: Galatians 5:16 and 5:24, Colossians 3:5, Job 31:1.
  • Learn one verse word for word for the moment you lose most often, so the answer is already in you when temptation comes.

The Bible verses about lust say three things plainly: lust starts in the heart before the body acts (Matthew 5:28; James 1:14–15), God provides a way out when you are tempted (1 Corinthians 10:13), and there is mercy for everyone who falls and comes back to Him (1 John 1:9; Hebrews 4:16).

The verses below are grouped by the moment you're in, each quoted from the NIV with a line on when to use it.

What does the Bible say about lust?

Scripture treats lust as desire that reaches for what God has forbidden, most often sexual desire for someone who is not yours. It begins in the heart (James 1:14–15), comes from the world rather than the Father (1 John 2:16), and is to be put to death (Colossians 3:5).

The New Testament word behind most of these verses, epithymia, means strong desire; it becomes lust when it reaches for what isn't yours, the coveting the tenth commandment forbids (Exodus 20:17). What lust means in the Bible has the full definition.

“but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
James 1:14–15

Use it whenyou feel yourself being drawn along; refuse the next step, whatever it is.

“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”
1 John 2:16

Use it whenlust seems to offer something you need; ask what you actually need, and seek that.

Which Bible verses help with lust and temptation right now?

Three verses help most when lust is pulling at you right now: 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises a way out, Psalm 119:37 asks God to turn your eyes, and James 4:7 says to submit to God and resist the devil. Pray one while you move away from the screen.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13

Use it whenit feels like there's no exit; take the nearest one, even just leaving the room.

“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.”
Psalm 119:37

Use it whenyour eyes want a second look; look away on purpose and put the phone down.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7

Use it whenthe pull feels like a battle you're losing; say no out loud and get up.

James puts submitting before resisting. You don't need to name the enemy; you stand in God's strength, as Ephesians 6:10–18 describes. For the next few minutes, see how to stop a porn urge right now.

What does the Bible say about lustful thoughts?

Scripture separates being tempted from giving in: Jesus was tempted in every way yet did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Matthew 5:28 addresses looking with lustful intent, welcoming and feeding a thought. Traditions differ on whether the first unchosen stirring is sin, but agree on the answer: take thoughts captive and let God renew your mind.

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Matthew 5:28

Use it whenyou've started replaying someone in your mind; stop and turn to your next task.

Noticing that someone is attractive is different from the look Jesus names, which is aimed at wanting.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
Hebrews 4:15

Use it whenan uninvited thought makes you feel guilty; let it pass without arguing or checking.

Christians name that first stirring differently. Catholic teaching (Catechism 2515) and many evangelicals hold that the inner pull is not sin until you consent; Reformed confessions (Westminster 6.5) call even unchosen stirrings sin, pardoned in Christ. Both say: don't feed it, and bring it to God without panic. Is lust a sin? sets out both views.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5

Use it whena thought has grown into a story you keep telling yourself; bring it to Christ.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2

Use it whenthe same thoughts come back week after week; change one input this week.

Which Bible verses help after you've fallen to lust?

After you fall to lust, start with 1 John 1:9: confess, and God is faithful to forgive and cleanse. Pray Psalm 51:1, David's plea for mercy after his own sexual sin, and come to God's throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16). Then refuse to hide, and get back up.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9

Use it whenshame tells you to wait until you feel sorry enough; confess now, specifically.

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.”
Psalm 51:1

Use it whenyou can't find your own words; borrow David's, written after his adultery with Bathsheba.

“Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16

Use it whenyou think you should stay away from God for a while; come to Him now.

When a voice says you're finished, remember Romans 8:1. It doesn't make the sin small. It tells you what God says over those in Christ who turn back to Him: no condemnation.

Which Bible verses help you overcome lust in the long fight?

For the long fight, Scripture points to direction more than willpower: walk by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16), remember that those in Christ have crucified the flesh (Galatians 5:24), put lust to death (Colossians 3:5), decide ahead about your eyes (Job 31:1) and guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23).

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:16

Use it whenyou're fighting lust by effort alone; pray before you open your phone each morning.

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Galatians 5:24

Use it whenlust feels like it owns you; you belong to Christ, so cut one access point.

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”
Colossians 3:5

Use it whenyou want to keep lust around in a tamer form; delete what you return to.

“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.”
Job 31:1

Use it whenyou keep deciding in the moment whether to look; decide once, ahead of time.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23

Use it whenyou notice the same feeling before temptation (lonely, bored, stressed); bring that to God.

Are there Bible verses about lust for men and for women?

Most Bible verses about lust apply to men and women alike. Proverbs 6:25 warns a son and Matthew 5:28 describes a man looking at a woman, but 1 Peter 2:11 addresses every believer. Lust is a human struggle, and Scripture's warnings and grace apply to everyone.

“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.”
Proverbs 6:25

Use it whenattraction to one person is sliding into fantasy; stop checking their profile.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.”
1 Peter 2:11

Use it whenyou start treating lust as harmless; treat the next temptation as an attack.

Women fight lust too, and many carry extra shame because they've been told it's a men's problem. The commands, the way out and the forgiveness are the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bible verse says lust is a sin?

Matthew 5:28 is the clearest: Jesus calls looking at someone lustfully adultery in the heart. Colossians 3:5 also lists lust among the things to put to death. Being tempted is not sin, though: Jesus was tempted and never sinned (Hebrews 4:15). Is lust a sin? shows where Christians draw the line.

Which Bible verse about lust should I memorize first?

The one for the moment you lose most often. If temptation wins in the first few seconds, start with Psalm 119:37 or James 4:7, both under fifteen words. If shame keeps you down after a fall, start with 1 John 1:9.

What do Bible verses about lust say in the King James Version?

The KJV often has "lust" where the NIV has "desire." James 1:14 reads "drawn away of his own lust, and enticed," and Galatians 5:16 reads "ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." The meaning is the same; this page quotes the NIV.

Which Bible verses say God forgives lust, even when you keep falling?

1 John 1:9 promises that if we confess, God is faithful and just to forgive, and it sets no limit on how often. Romans 8:1 still holds for the believer who falls again and turns back. A prayer for forgiveness after lust gives you the words.
