Pray

An Undivided Heart

5 steps

  1. Father, You see what is pulling at my mind right now.

  2. I won't hide it from You, and I won't keep feeding it.

  3. Take this thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.

  4. Turn my eyes away, and give me an undivided heart.

  5. Help me take the next step away, in Jesus' name.

Amen

The verse it stands on

“Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”
Psalm 86:11

Before You Pray

  • A prayer against lust can be one honest sentence. Ask God to take the thought captive, then step away.
  • Each prayer below stands on Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:5 and Philippians 4:8 for your thoughts, Psalm 119:37 for your eyes, James 4:7 for the spiritual battle, Psalm 4:8 for bedtime.
  • An unwanted intrusive thought, or a dream you didn't choose, is not a sin you committed. Pray from that truth.
  • If the pull doesn't fade, pray again and move. Jesus taught that we "should always pray and not give up" (Luke 18:1).

A prayer against lust doesn't need to be long or polished: tell God honestly what is pulling at you, ask Him to take the thought captive and turn your eyes, then do the next obedient thing. The five-line prayer above stands on Psalm 86:11, and its one-breath version fits the first few seconds.

Below are prayers to overcome lust in your thoughts, your eyes, the spiritual battle, sexual sin, bedtime and the nights it won't let go. For the moment of temptation itself, see what to pray when tempted: ten battlefield prayers.

How do you pray against lust?

To pray against lust, pray honestly and briefly, with your feet ready to move. Name the temptation to God without describing it, ask for what Scripture describes (a mind obedient to Christ, eyes turned from worthless things, an undivided heart), and pair the prayer with one step away. You are asking for help, not proving you deserve it.

What is a prayer to stop lustful thoughts?

A prayer to stop lustful thoughts asks God for strength to do what Paul describes, "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5), then to fill your mind with what is true and pure instead (Philippians 4:8). You can't always stop a thought from arriving. You can refuse to host it.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5

What is a prayer against lust of the eyes?

Pray Psalm 119:37 as your own: "Turn my eyes away from worthless things." Scripture lists "the lust of the eyes" among the things that come "not from the Father but from the world" (1 John 2:16). A prayer for lustful eyes asks for strength to look away and grace to see people rightly.

“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”
1 John 2:16
“Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.”
Psalm 119:37

How do you pray against a spirit of lust?

Pray the way Scripture teaches spiritual warfare: submit to God, resist the devil (James 4:7), put on the armor of God and keep praying (Ephesians 6:10–18). The battle is real, but you don't need a formula, a demon's name or a checklist of signs. You need Christ, His Word and persistence.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.”
Ephesians 6:11

The phrase "spirit of lust" isn't in the NIV, and Christians read the idea differently. Many Pentecostal and charismatic believers mean a demonic influence, resisted in Jesus' name. They point to our struggle against spiritual powers (Ephesians 6:12), to Hosea's "spirit of prostitution" (Hosea 4:12) and to Jesus driving out impure spirits (Mark 1:23–26). Many other Christians see our own desires, the world and the devil working together (James 1:14; Ephesians 2:1–3) and stress a renewed mind. Both hold to the same commands: submit, resist, stand, pray.

What is a prayer against sexual sin and the lust of the flesh?

A prayer against sexual sin and the lust of the flesh asks God to change what you make room for, not only what you do in the moment. Scripture says "do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh" (Romans 13:14), which reaches back to the choices you make before temptation arrives.

If your fight is mostly with pornography, use the prayer against porn addiction. For a prayer to start each day, see the prayer for purity.

Is there a prayer against lust before bed and against lustful dreams?

Yes. Pray before you lie down, not after the phone is in your hand. Offer the day to God the way Psalm 141:2 pictures evening prayer rising like incense, then entrust your sleep to Him, who alone makes you "dwell in safety" (Psalm 4:8). A lustful dream you did not choose is not a sin you committed.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8

Daytime choices still matter: many Christians find that what they feed their minds by day surfaces at night. If a dream wakes you, pray the one-breath prayer and go back to sleep. For the practical routine, see how to stop porn urges at night.

What if lust won't go away even after I pray?

Keep praying, and stop measuring prayer by whether the feeling disappears. Jesus told a parable so His disciples would "always pray and not give up" (Luke 18:1). Lingering temptation is a reason to pray again, change where you are and tell someone you trust.

If you've already fallen, pray the prayer for forgiveness after lust. If lust feels out of control or the struggle is leaving you hopeless, talk to a pastor and a licensed counselor. If you ever feel unsafe, call or text 988 in the US, or find a free helpline elsewhere at findahelpline.com.

What should I do after praying against lust?

Flee and pursue. Paul told Timothy to "flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart" (2 Timothy 2:22). Leave the situation physically, then move toward God and other people.

  • Change rooms and leave the phone behind. Go where other people are.
  • Tell one person: a friend, pastor or counselor. If you're a teenager, start with a parent, youth pastor or school counselor.
  • Keep Scripture close. Save two or three Bible verses about lust where you'll see them tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if sexual thoughts come while I'm praying?

Keep praying rather than stopping to fight them. Many Christians experience this, and it doesn't mean God has turned away. Say "Jesus, I give You this," then return to your words or pray a verse aloud. If the thoughts bring intense fear or endless re-confessing, that may be scrupulosity, which is treatable.

What is a short prayer for lust and temptation?

Say this in one breath: "Lord, take this thought captive. Turn my eyes. Give me an undivided heart." A short prayer is still a real prayer. Then stand up and leave the room, and if the pull comes back, pray it again.

Is it wrong to pray the same prayer every night?

No. In Gethsemane Jesus prayed the same thing a third time (Matthew 26:44), and the Psalms were written to be prayed again and again. Repeating a prayer you mean is faithful. If you must repeat it until it feels exactly right, that can be a sign of scrupulosity, and a counselor can help.

Is there a Bible verse to pray against lust?

Yes. Psalm 86:11, "give me an undivided heart," is a prayer against lust in one line. 2 Corinthians 10:5 and Philippians 4:8 fit lustful thoughts, Psalm 119:37 your eyes, James 4:7 the spiritual battle and Psalm 4:8 bedtime. More are in the Bible verses about lust, grouped by the moment you need them.
