A Prayer for Lust and Forgiveness After a Fall or Relapse: One-Breath, Full, and 'Again' Versions

The courtyard gate of a stone farmhouse standing open at dawn onto a dusty hill road, an oil lamp still lit in the window and a robe laid on a bench: the father's house in Luke 15, where the way back is open.

Pray

Faithful to Forgive

5 steps

  1. Father, I'm coming to You now. Have mercy on me because of Your unfailing love; I have nothing else to bring.

  2. I gave in to lust. I won't shrink it or excuse it. I sinned against You, and You are right about it.

  3. You promised that if I confess, You are faithful and just to forgive me. I turn from this, let it go, and receive Your forgiveness as a gift I didn't earn.

  4. Wash me and make my heart clean again. Steady my spirit, keep me near You, and give me back the joy of being Yours.

  5. Give me a willing spirit for the next step. I'm getting up as Your forgiven child, because there is no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus.

Amen

The verse it stands on

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9

Before You Pray

  • Pray right away. Hebrews 4:16 invites you to come to God "with confidence" in your time of need, so there is no reason to wait until you feel better.
  • Pray it in four movements: confess, renounce, receive, rise. Proverbs 28:13 promises mercy to "the one who confesses and renounces" sin.
  • The same sin again is not outside His mercy. God "will again have compassion on us" (Micah 7:19).
  • End by receiving forgiveness: "there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1).

A prayer for lust and forgiveness can be this simple: tell God plainly what you did, turn from it, receive the forgiveness He promises, and get up. You do not have to feel clean first. The promise of 1 John 1:9 is attached to confessing, not to waiting.

Above: a one-breath version and a full five-step confession. Below: a prayer for falling again, shorter prayers, and three steps for after you pray.

When should I pray for forgiveness after lust?

Right away. Scripture sets no waiting period between sin and confession. Hebrews 4:16 invites believers to God's throne of grace "with confidence" in their time of need, and in Luke 15 the father runs to his son while he is "still a long way off," before the son has said a word.

“Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16

Many Christians sentence themselves to hours or days of not praying after a fall, as though distance were a payment.

In Jesus' parable, "while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son." The son's rehearsed speech about being unworthy was cut short by the best robe, a ring and a feast, on the day he came home (Luke 15:21–24).

Is there a prayer for forgiveness of lust in the Bible?

Yes: Psalm 51, David's prayer after his sexual sin with Bathsheba, is Scripture's best-known prayer of confession. It asks for mercy, washing, a pure heart and restored joy. 1 John 1:9 supplies the promise beneath it: God is faithful and just to forgive those who confess.

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
Psalm 51:1–2

Psalm 51, written after Nathan confronted David (2 Samuel 12), does not bargain or promise never to fail again. It starts with God's "unfailing love" and only then names the sin.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
Psalm 51:10–12

Verses 10–12 ask for more than a clean record: a steady spirit, God's nearness, joy restored. For renewal on the days between falls, use the prayers for purity.

What does a prayer for lust and repentance include?

Four movements: confess (name the sin to God without shrinking it), renounce (turn from it and let go of what you were saving for later), receive (take the forgiveness He promises), and rise (get up and take the next faithful step). Proverbs 28:13 attaches mercy to confessing and renouncing.

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”
Proverbs 28:13
  1. Confess

Use plain words: "I looked at porn," not "I messed up." Psalm 32 describes the weight of hiding sin and the relief of confessing it.

  2. Renounce

Turn away and mean it, letting go of what you were keeping for later. You don't need to make a vow that you will never struggle again.

  3. Receive

Many people confess and skip this. Thank God that He is "faithful and just" to forgive (1 John 1:9), and let His promise outweigh how bad you feel.

  4. Rise

Get up, wash your face, and either sleep or go on with your day as someone forgiven.

If you're Catholic, your Church asks you to confess grave sin in the sacrament of reconciliation, and teaches that sorrow rooted in love for God, with the firm intention to confess as soon as possible, already obtains forgiveness (Catechism 1452–1457). So pray now, then go to confession; the prayer is the first step toward it.

How do I pray for forgiveness when I've fallen into lust again?

Pray the same honest confession, without a harsher tone. Micah 7:18–19 describes a God who does not stay angry forever, delights to show mercy, and will "again have compassion on us." Keep confessing each time, and let a repeated fall send you to get more help in daylight.

“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”
Micah 7:18–19

What is a short repentance prayer for lust?

A short repentance prayer for lust can be one honest sentence: "Lord, I gave in to lust; I'm sorry, I turn from it, and I receive Your mercy." Two more follow, for lustful thoughts you entertained and for going to sleep after a fall. Use your own words if they come.

For where temptation ends and lust begins, see is lust a sin? While temptation is still happening, use the short prayers in what to pray when tempted.

How do I pray when I don't feel forgiven after lust?

Pray the promise back to God instead of waiting for the feeling. 1 John 1:9 rests forgiveness on His faithfulness, and Romans 8:1 says there is "now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Guilty feelings can linger without cancelling the promise; tell Him so, and thank Him anyway.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,”
Romans 8:1

The "now" in Romans 8:1 includes tonight; there is no probation period. If, after confessing, a voice keeps calling you worthless, answer it with this verse rather than with more apologies.

What should I do after praying for forgiveness?

Three things, in the next few minutes: close whatever you opened, text one person you trust, and get up and move. Then rest, forgiven; you do not need to earn sleep. If falls keep repeating, plan the next day and the next week in daylight.

  1. Close it

Close the tab, delete what you saved, put the phone in another room.

  2. Text one person

"I fell tonight. Can you pray for me?" is enough. James 5:16 ties confessing to each other with healing. If you're a teenager, a parent, youth pastor or school counselor is a good person to tell.

  3. Get up and move

Stand up, change rooms, splash cold water on your face, or step outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to feel sorry enough before God forgives me?

No: God's forgiveness rests on His faithfulness and Christ's work, not on how sorry you feel. Paul says godly sorrow leads to repentance, while worldly sorrow leads to death (2 Corinthians 7:10). If you feel numb, tell Him so and confess anyway.

Is there a prayer for giving in to temptation?

Yes, and it can be short: "Father, I gave in to temptation and I'm sorry. I'm coming back to You now; have mercy on me and help me up." You don't have to wait until you feel better. Hebrews 4:16 invites you to come "with confidence" in your time of need.

What if I fall again tonight?

Then pray again, just as honestly. God delights to show mercy (Micah 7:18), and 1 John 1:9 sets no limit on how often you may come. Then make tonight harder: phone out of the bedroom, one text to someone you trust, and a plan for porn urges at night.

Can I pray against lust and for forgiveness at the same time?

Yes, and Psalm 51 does both: it asks God to blot out the sin and to "create in me a pure heart" (Psalm 51:10). Confess first, then ask for strength for next time. For the fight before the next temptation, pray the prayer against lust.
