Prayer Against Pornography Addiction: Prayers for the Urge, the Slip, and the Long Road Back
I Want to Get Well
Jesus, You asked a man stuck for years whether he wanted to get well. Here is my honest answer: part of me wants this habit gone, and part of me still reaches for it.
I've tried to quit alone, at night, in secret, with promises I didn't keep. I bring You the habit as it is: the triggers, the hiding, the lost hours.
Release my feet from this snare. Teach me to say no when the pull comes, and give me the humility to change what I keep putting off, starting with my phone.
I keep telling myself I have no one to help me. You are here, Lord. Give me the courage to tell one person, and lead me to the help I need.
My freedom rests on Your faithfulness, not on how many clean days I can count. If I fall, I will get up and come straight back to You. Today, Lord, I want to get well.
Amen
“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’”
- When you want to look at porn: name it to God, ask for the way out, and put the phone down while you're still praying.
- Pray at each point of the cycle: the trigger, the urge, the open tab, the slip, and the clean day.
- Paul refuses to be ruled by anything: "I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12).
- Pair prayer with practical limits, one trusted person, and a counselor when use feels out of control.
A prayer against pornography addiction is an honest request for freedom from a habit you haven't been able to break alone, prayed at every point of the cycle and not only after a fall. Name the pull to God, ask Him for the way out, and take one practical step while you're still praying.
Prayer isn't a switch that turns a habit off. It is how you bring the real habit, hidden parts and all, to Jesus. Use the full prayer as a prayer for porn addiction on a calm evening; keep the one-breath version for the first seconds of an urge.
How do I pray when I want to look at porn?
Pray in three moves. First, name it: "Lord, I want to look at porn right now." Second, ask for the way out and for the strength to take it. Third, pray with your feet: put the phone down or leave the room while you are still praying. Short and honest beats long and polished.
Name it
Say it, out loud if you can: "Lord, I want to look at porn right now." Naming a temptation is not giving in to it.
Ask for the way out
Ask for the way out: "My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare" (Psalm 25:15).
Pray with your feet
Keep praying while you move: phone face down in another room, light on, door open. Grace "teaches us to say 'No'" (Titus 2:12), and moving your body is part of saying it.
The 4-step battle plan covers your phone and your body in the moment, and short battlefield prayers for the moment of temptation give you more words to pray.
What Scripture is this prayer against pornography built on?
The Bible never mentions pornography, but it speaks directly about being mastered. Paul writes, "I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12), and promises that "sin shall no longer be your master" because believers are under grace (Romans 6:14). The "I Want to Get Well" prayer stands on Jesus' question at Bethesda (John 5:6).
In John 5, Jesus asked a man, an invalid for thirty-eight years, "Do you want to get well?" (John 5:6), then told him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk" (John 5:8). His illness is never called a sin, and porn is not his condition; we borrow the story's shape: a long time stuck, a man who said he had no one to help him, and a Lord who healed him anyway.
In 1 Corinthians 6:12 Paul is answering a slogan some in Corinth seem to have used to excuse sexual sin, and his word is mastery. Romans 6:14 puts the power to break it in grace, not a stricter rule.
What can I pray to stop watching porn at each stage of the cycle?
A porn habit usually runs in the same order: a trigger, a building urge, the open tab, the aftermath, and the clean days in between. Pray for the point you're at. When the urge builds, pray: "Jesus, the pull is getting louder. Release my feet from this snare. I'm standing up." Then stand up.
Why does porn addiction feel like a cycle I can't break?
Because habits tend to run as a loop: a cue (a time, a place, a feeling), a craving, a routine, and a brief relief that makes the loop likelier next time. Repeated in the same setting, the cue starts doing the deciding. This describes habits in general, with no claim about brain disease or your faith.
Habit research (a review of habits in general, not of pornography) suggests the room, the hour and the phone become part of the habit. Ask God what fills the slot: a walk, a call, sleep, a person. Whether "addiction" is the right word is debated; read feeling addicted vs. being addicted before taking on the label.
Is there a gooning prayer?
Yes. Gooning is slang for porn or masturbation sessions deliberately stretched out for hours, often described as trance-like, so a gooning prayer is less about one glance and more about waking up. Ask God to bring you back to the present and to a sober mind, then leave the room. Tomorrow, tell someone you trust.
Paul writes, "let us be awake and sober" (1 Thessalonians 5:6). What gooning is has the full picture, and whether gooning is a sin has its own answer.
If you're a teenager reading this, please talk to a parent, a youth pastor or a school counselor.
Is prayer enough to overcome porn addiction?
Prayer is essential, but Scripture never treats it as a replacement for action or for other people. James 5:16 links confessing to each other with being healed. Pair prayer with practical limits, one trusted person, and a counselor if your use feels out of control.
- Make access harder with iPhone's Screen Time, knowing a porn blocker and in-the-moment help do different jobs.
- Tell one person: a friend, a pastor or priest, a small group.
- Plan for the moment with the nighttime playbook and Bible verses about lust, and see where prayer fits in the Christian porn recovery guide.
When to see a counselor
See a licensed counselor if porn use feels out of your control, is hurting your marriage, work or sleep, or is tangled up with depression or anxiety. A 2025 meta-analysis found psychotherapy, mostly CBT and ACT, helped with problematic pornography use, though its authors flag a high risk of bias. These prayers are not a substitute for professional care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a prayer to stop watching porn?
Yes: "Lord, I want to look at porn right now. Release my feet from this snare and give me the strength to put the phone down." Then put the phone down while you're still praying. For a fuller prayer on a calm evening, pray "I Want to Get Well," built on John 5:6.
What is a good prayer for porn addiction when I keep failing?
Pray the honest one: "I keep falling, and I keep coming back to You." Micah 7:8, spoken by a people who admit their sin, says "Though I have fallen, I will rise." Repeated failure is a reason to add help, such as limits, a friend or a counselor, and never a reason to stop praying.
Is there a prayer for lust or sexual addiction?
Yes: "Lord, this has a hold on me. Guard my eyes, heal what's driving it, and give me strength to walk away today." Lust or sexual addiction needs prayer for the habit and for the heart. For the thoughts themselves, pray the prayer against lust.
Can I pray against pornography for someone I love?
Yes. Pray for their freedom, not at them: "Lord, set them free from what has a hold on them, and show me how to love them well." If it's your husband, there is a prayer for a husband addicted to porn. When you can, talk with them face to face.
