Bible Verses About Pornography: What Scripture Says, and Verses That Help You Quit (NIV)
- The Bible never names pornography, but it speaks to it directly. Jesus calls lustful looking adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), and Scripture's word for sexual immorality, porneia, shares a root with the word pornography.
- The verses below are grouped by need: what porn is, why it harms, how to fight it, and hope after a relapse, each with a line on when to use it.
- Scripture describes compulsion as being mastered (1 Corinthians 6:12), and promises that sin no longer has to be your master (Romans 6:14).
- A fall is not the end. God forgives those who confess (1 John 1:9), and there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
The Bible never uses the word, but there are clear Bible verses about pornography: *Jesus says that looking at someone lustfully is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), and the New Testament repeatedly forbids porneia, sexual immorality, a word that shares a root with pornography itself. The English word, first recorded in 1842, comes from the Greek pornographos, "(one) depicting prostitutes" (Etymonline): pornē, a prostitute, plus graphein*, to write.
If the urge is happening right now, start with the in-the-moment guide. These verses will still be here in the morning.
What does the Bible say about pornography?
The Bible says nothing about pornography by name, but it addresses every part of it. Jesus treats lustful looking as adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), Paul forbids even a hint of sexual immorality (Ephesians 5:3), and Christians are told to flee it (1 Corinthians 6:18). Porn is lustful looking and sexual immorality on a screen.
In the verses on this page, "sexual immorality" translates porneia, which lexicons trace through the verb porneuō back to pornē, a prostitute (Strong's G4202). The word history is interesting, but the stronger argument is what Jesus said about looking.
“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
you're telling yourself that watching isn't doing anything.
The verb behind "lustfully" is epithymeō, to set the heart on something, the same verb Paul uses for coveting in Romans 7:7 (Strong's G1937). Noticing that someone is attractive, or having a thought arrive uninvited, is not the same as looking in order to want. What Matthew 5:28 means, phrase by phrase.
Which Bible verses about porn describe what it really is?
Three verses name porn in Scripture's own categories: sexual immorality and impurity that have no place among God's people (Ephesians 5:3), lust and greed that Paul calls idolatry (Colossians 3:5), and eyes that are never satisfied (Proverbs 27:20). Each names something porn sells and cannot deliver.
“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.”
"just a little" starts to sound like a reasonable compromise.
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”
you need to see what porn is really competing for: your worship.
Porn trains exactly this greed: wanting more, wanting newer, and taking without giving yourself to anyone. That is why Paul can call it idolatry.
“Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.”
the scroll keeps promising that the next one will be enough.
There is always one more, and the eyes never arrive at enough. The fight is won by looking away, not by finding the one that finally satisfies.
Why does the Bible say porn is harmful?
Scripture gives three reasons. Sexual sin is a sin against your own body, which belongs to God (1 Corinthians 6:18–20). Holding lust close is like scooping fire into your lap (Proverbs 6:25–27). And desire that is fed conceives sin, which grows toward death (James 1:14–15). The harm is spiritual first, and never merely abstract.
Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 6:18–20 to Christians in Corinth who seem to have thought their bodies didn't touch their souls. The word for prostitute just before it, in verses 15 and 16, is pornē (Strong's G4204).
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
porn tells you it's harmless because no one else is involved.
Paul starts with you: your body is the Spirit's temple, bought at a price. The people on the screen bear God's image too, which is one more reason porn is never truly private.
“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes. For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man's wife preys on your very life. Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?”
you think you can watch "a little" and stay in control.
The setting is a father warning his son about adultery, not screens, but the principle carries: the danger starts in the heart and the eyes. Proverbs 7 tells the story slowly, as a young man drifts down a street at twilight toward a house he has no business visiting.
“but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
a fantasy is starting and you want to see where it goes.
James separates temptation from sin. Feeling the pull is not the fall; lingering with it is how the fall usually happens.
Are there Bible verses about lust addiction and sexual addiction?
Scripture doesn't use the word addiction, but it describes the experience: being mastered by something (1 Corinthians 6:12) and living under sin as a master (Romans 6:14). It also promises that grace breaks that mastery. You don't need a diagnosis to take a compulsive porn habit seriously, or to have hope.
“"I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but I will not be mastered by anything.”
you call something a free choice that no longer feels like one.
A habit you return to against your own wishes, at the same hour, after the same triggers, is what being mastered feels like from the inside.
“For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.”
it feels like this habit is simply who you are now.
Research is a separate question from Scripture. "Porn addiction" isn't a standalone diagnosis. The closest recognized condition is compulsive sexual behaviour disorder in the ICD-11, grouped with impulse-control disorders rather than addictive behaviours, and its authors write that it should not be diagnosed from distress rooted only in moral disapproval. Feeling addicted vs being addicted walks through the difference honestly.
Which Bible verses help you quit porn?
The verses that help most are about action: flee and pursue (2 Timothy 2:22), make no plans for the flesh (Romans 13:14), decide in advance what your eyes will approve (Psalm 101:3; Job 31:1), and trust that God provides a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13). Quitting starts before the urge arrives.
“Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
you need to leave the room and know where you're going instead.
Notice the company: "along with those who call on the Lord." One honest conversation with a Christian friend or pastor changes what you carry.
“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”
you want to keep a door open "just in case."
The private browser and the phone in bed are small plans to gratify the flesh later. Jesus' words about cutting off whatever causes you to stumble (Matthew 5:29) press the same point: remove easy access.
“I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.”
you're deciding, while calm, what you will and won't watch.
“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.”
you want to settle the question once instead of every night.
A covenant is a decision made once and kept, which is very different from a fresh debate at 11pm. Pray these two in the morning.
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
it feels like there's no way out of tonight.
It doesn't promise the temptation will be mild or brief. Often the way out is ordinary: a door, a walk, a phone call. What 1 Corinthians 10:13 means.
What Bible verses give hope after a porn relapse?
Keep three for the morning after. 1 John 1:9 promises forgiveness and cleansing to those who confess. Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Micah 7:8 gives you words for getting up: "Though I have fallen, I will rise." Confess quickly, and don't let shame write the next chapter.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
shame says to wait until you feel sorry enough to pray.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,”
the voice in your head says God is finished with you.
“Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.”
you've fallen and need words for getting back up.
Paul reminded the Corinthians that some of them had lived this way and had since been washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:11). Conviction leads you back to God; condemnation tells you to hide. For the next steps, see what to do after a porn relapse and a prayer for forgiveness after lust.

What should you do when the urge hits right now?
Skip the list of verses and do four things: look away from the screen, pray one honest sentence, move your body out of the room, and once it passes, close the door for next time. Scripture's pattern is to flee and pursue (2 Timothy 2:22), and none of it requires feeling strong first.
Look away
Put the phone face down or close the laptop, and fix your eyes on something real in the room.
Pray one sentence
"Lord, I'm tempted. Show me the way out, and give me strength to take it." For more words, here are prayers against porn addiction.
Move
Stand up and leave the room: cold water on your face, a walk outside, somewhere with other people.
Close the door for next time
Turn on your iPhone's own Screen Time setting, Limit Adult Websites (step by step), and tell one person you trust about tonight.
How do you use these verses so they help when you're tempted?
Pick three, not twenty: one for the moment (1 Corinthians 10:13), one for the morning (Job 31:1 or Psalm 101:3), and one for after a fall (1 John 1:9). Learn them while you're calm, pray them back to God, and tell someone which ones you chose, so they're familiar before you need them.
Psalm 119:11 describes hiding God's word in the heart so as not to sin; a card by your bed is a good start. For the bigger picture, see the Christian porn recovery guide, Bible verses about lust and Bible verses about sexual purity.
If you're a teenager, please tell a parent, a youth pastor or a school counselor you trust. You shouldn't carry this alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is watching porn a sin according to the Bible?
Yes. Christians across traditions read Jesus' words on lustful looking (Matthew 5:28) and the command to flee sexual immorality as covering porn. Temptation itself isn't sin, and an unwanted thought isn't lust. Is lust a sin?
Is watching porn adultery?
Jesus calls lustful looking adultery "in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Most teachers distinguish this from physical adultery, and churches differ on whether habitual porn use can be treated like adultery in questions of divorce, so seek pastoral counsel there. What Matthew 5:28 means.
Can God free me from porn addiction?
Yes. Scripture promises that sin no longer has to be your master (Romans 6:14), and Jesus says those the Son sets free are free indeed (John 8:36). Freedom usually comes through ordinary means over time: confession, changed habits and honest community. Does God forgive porn?
Does the Bible mention pornography?
Not by name. The English word dates from the 1840s, built from Greek words for depicting prostitutes. But Scripture addresses porn through porneia (sexual immorality), Jesus' teaching on lustful looking (Matthew 5:28), and the command to flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18). What sexual immorality means.
What is the best Bible verse for fighting porn?
For the moment itself, 1 Corinthians 10:13: God is faithful and provides a way out. For deciding ahead of time, Job 31:1. For after a fall, 1 John 1:9. One verse you know by heart helps more than twenty you've bookmarked.
