Prayer for a Husband Addicted to Porn: Prayers for Him, for Your Own Heart, and for Your Marriage

Pray

A New Heart for Him

5 steps

  1. Father, You saw this before I did; nothing in my husband is hidden from You. I bring him to You, and my hurt with him.

  2. Search his heart and show him what is there. Let him feel it as conviction that turns him back to You, not shame that makes him hide.

  3. Give him a new heart. Where it has turned to stone, make it flesh again: honest, tender toward me, hungrier for You than for anything on a screen.

  4. When lust and temptation come for him, show him the way out and give him courage to take it. Put people around him who will stand with him in the light.

  5. And hold me while You work. Keep me safe, show me what is mine to carry, and let my worth rest in You alone.

Amen

The verse it stands on

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
Ezekiel 36:26

Before You Pray

  • A prayer for a husband addicted to porn asks for two things: a new heart for him (Ezekiel 36:26), and safety and wisdom for you.
  • Your safety comes first. If there is abuse, threats or sexual coercion, get help first: in the US, call 1-800-799-7233.
  • His porn use is not your fault. Each one carries their own load (Galatians 6:5).
  • Forgiveness is not denial or instant trust. Jesus pairs forgiving with naming the sin (Luke 17:3).
  • You don't have to decide about your marriage today. Take it to a pastor or a counselor who understands betrayal.

A prayer for a husband addicted to porn can be short and honest: ask God to convict him, make him truthful, set him free and give him a new heart, and ask just as boldly for yourself, for comfort, wisdom and safety. The prayer above does both, built on God's promise to His people in Ezekiel 36:26.

This page is written to you, the wife. "Porn addiction" isn't a formal diagnosis, but the struggle is real either way, and so is your hurt.

What Scripture can I pray over a husband struggling with lust?

Pray Ezekiel 36:26 and Psalm 139:23–24 over a husband struggling with lust or porn. In Ezekiel, God promises a heart of flesh in place of a heart of stone. In the psalm, David asks God to search him. Pray those words over your husband, and leave the searching and changing to God.

God spoke Ezekiel 36:26 to Israel in exile, and every verb is His: "I will give you a new heart." You can't love your husband into one, and praying doesn't guarantee his choices; your safety and healing don't have to wait for him to change.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23–24

What is a prayer against temptation for my husband?

A prayer against temptation for your husband asks God for four things: conviction that leads him to repent rather than hide, honesty when the truth costs him, a way out when he is tempted and the will to take it, and a hunger for God that outgrows the pull of porn.

For words he can pray himself, see the prayer against porn addiction.

How do I pray for my own heart when I'm hurt and angry?

Pray honestly about the hurt. Psalm 62:8 invites you to pour out your heart to God as it is. Ask for comfort in the grief, anger that doesn't turn into sin, freedom from the lie that this is your fault, and wisdom about what forgiveness asks of you.

“…I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.”
1 Samuel 1:15

Hannah prayed at Shiloh with such raw grief that the priest thought she was drunk (1 Samuel 1:9–16), and God did not rebuke how she prayed.

Self-blame is common: in a self-selected 2024 study of 297 partners after sexual betrayal of any kind, almost all women, 87% reported self-blame and 43% had considered harming themselves. If that is you, tell someone today: in the US, call or text 988; elsewhere, see findahelpline.com.

Jesus says, "If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them" (Luke 17:3). God forgives anyone who turns back to Him, but that doesn't oblige you to trust your husband tomorrow; trust is rebuilt slowly.

When the hurt comes back in waves

  1. Name it

"This is grief." "This is anger." Said to God, that is a prayer.

  2. Pray

The one-breath prayer above, or simply "Lord, hold me."

  3. Move

Step outside, call a friend who knows, or write it down.

How do I pray for our marriage and for wise boundaries?

Pray for honesty between you, real help for both of you, and wise boundaries: limits that protect your heart while trust is rebuilt. Boundaries are not punishment. Proverbs 4:23 tells you to guard your heart, and peace is asked of you only "as far as it depends on you" (Romans 12:18).

A boundary might be "Tell me the truth; don't make me find it," or "I need you to get help." For praying together later, see prayers for purity.

How do I pray for someone struggling with lust?

Pray for someone struggling with lust by name, gently, and with an eye on your own heart. Galatians 6:1 asks anyone restoring someone caught in sin to do it gently and watch themselves. For a friend, a sibling or an adult son, ask God for their conviction, honesty, freedom and a hunger for Him.

More prayers for that fight are on the prayer against lust page.

What should I do after praying for my husband?

Take it in order: make sure you are safe, have one honest conversation when you are both calm, find a licensed Christian counselor trained in betrayal trauma for yourself, and let him build his own accountability and blocking. You don't have to decide the future of your marriage today.

  1. Safety first

If there is abuse, threats or coercion, get help before any conversation, and see a counselor on your own, not as a couple (why). "The prudent see danger and take refuge" (Proverbs 22:3).

  2. One honest conversation

At a calm time, say what you know, how it hurt and what you need. If you only suspect, say what you've noticed; you don't need proof to ask for honesty. If he minimises it or blames you, tell your counselor.

  3. Help for you too

A licensed Christian counselor experienced with betrayal trauma, and a wise pastor or a group for betrayed partners.

  4. His accountability, his blocking

Encourage him to tell a mature believer and turn on Screen Time's adult-website limit; accountability apps are compared here. Don't become the only person he answers to; it makes you his monitor.

If he falls again, the prayer for forgiveness after a fall is written for him; the Christian porn recovery guide maps the longer road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it my fault that my husband watches porn?

No, his porn use is not your fault. Your husband's choices are his; each one carries their own load (Galatians 6:5). A marriage can have real problems worth working on, but nothing about your body, your age or your sex life changes that.

Is my husband's porn use cheating?

It is a real betrayal of the heart. Jesus called lustful looking adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), so your hurt is not an overreaction. Christians differ on whether it is grounds for divorce; take that question to a pastor or counselor, and see what the Bible means by lust.

Do I have to decide right now whether to stay?

You don't have to decide today. Get safe first, especially if there is abuse, threats or coercion. Then take the question slowly with a pastor you trust or a counselor who understands betrayal. No one should rush you.

How do I pray for a lustful husband?

Pray for more than the porn: his eyes, his thoughts and his honesty. Ask God to turn his eyes from what isn't his, make him truthful with you, and give him a heart that wants God more than lust. Pray it daily and briefly, and leave his choices with him.
